Sophie and Prince Edward visited Elmfield Estate on the outskirts of Gilford, County Down, as they carried out a series of royal engagements on Thursday. The Earl and Countess of Wessex met local producers, artisans and customers at the monthly wholefood and wellbeing market.
During the visit, Sophie took a sip of whiskey after being offered a sample.
However, she was taken by surprise by the strength of the drink and was left coughing and spluttering.
The Countess laughed and said: “That’s quite strong!”
Sophie was elegant in a long patterned dress for the royal engagement.
“And then all of a sudden there’s a bit of a hiatus and things have changed a bit.
“Naturally, the media are looking for people to fill the so-called void.
“But you know, we have been doing this for what feels like a pretty long time!
“If people want to pay more attention to what we’re doing then great, because actually, that’s got to be good for our organisations and the work that we are trying to carry out.”
Edward added: “Well, we’re flattered is probably the best way of putting it.”
