New mother Edwina Bartholomew got emotional and teared up live on Sunrise on Tuesday, as she spoke about a story she covered about a little girl who is battling childhood cancer.

The 37-year-old journalist and Channel Seven presenter welled up as she urged views to donate to a GoFundMe page set up for little Grace Bridges, two, who is in recovery after being diagnosed with Metastatic Hepatoblastoma in 2019.

‘That makes me so sad this story,’ Edwina said, as she fought back tears in the Sydney studio.

‘She’s not totally out of the woods, she will have ongoing blood tests until she is six years old… because of the chemo, 70 doses… [there’s] so many problems with hearing and brittle bones,’ she said as she trailed off and welled up in tears again.

‘Sorry, these stories… there’s a GoFundMe page set up… [they’re] such a lovely, lovely family,’ she added.

Sunrise co-hosts Natalie Barr and David ‘Kochie’ Koch comforted Edwina and remarked how Grace is a ‘miracle’ baby, now fighting the cancer on her own after having her treatment stopped after nearly 70 doses of chemotherapy.

‘The power of the human body,’ Kochie remarked.

He added: ‘We talk about miracles, that is a miracle.’

‘Finger’s crossed everything continues like this,’ Edwina added.

Edwina had covered the story of little Grace, two, and her doting parents Emma and Adam.

Grace has recently baffled doctors as she’s slowly recovering from the cancer Metastatic Hepatoblastoma and fighting it on her own, after stopping treatment after 70 doses of chemotherapy.

Grace had a tumour on her liver and had collapsed lungs at one stage of her battle and spent almost her whole life in and out of hospital.

But as Edwina reported, Grace is on the road to recovery and walking again, with her body slowly beating the disease on her own.

Last month meanwhile, Edwina relived the terrifying moment her one-year-old daughter Molly was rushed to hospital.

‘For us, it was all new and mildly terrifying. We thought we were going in for a very quick check-up. We ended up staying all weekend,’ the 36-year-old wrote.

Edwina explained she was initially concerned it was something life-threatening.

‘I have done many stories in hospitals over the years, but it’s another thing entirely to be guiding your own child through a health hiccup,’ she said.

‘This time I was the mum with the red eyes, sleeping on a fold-out chair and worrying about the outcome of an operation.’

Edwina’s husband Neil Varcoe also spoke about the ‘scary’ experience on Instagram.

He wrote: ‘This time last week, we were eating cold pizza on the floor of an emergency department. The first of a three-day stay.

‘It was scary. I barely slept. You were mostly fine, watching The Princess Bride and doing the rounds with the nurses.’

He added: ‘We discovered something new about you last weekend, Molly Matilda.’

‘While you are sunshine most of the time, you’ll fight like an alley cat if someone tries to hurt you. And that’s a good thing.’

Edwina and Neil welcomed their daughter Molly in December 2019.
