Royals-turned-reporters William and Kate have anchored a youth-focused special to discuss the importance of mental health for a show being broadcast today at 12.45pm and 5.45pm.

Kate told listeners in a trailer last night that “Newsbeat will sound slightly different” today.

She and William, who have long sought to highlight the wave of anxiety and depression that has hit a generation of young people in Britain, spoke about stigmas around mental health, and the pressures of social media.

They also addressed ways to equip young people with the tools to open up about how they are feeling and alleviate their problems.

William, 40, said: “A lot of people don’t realise what they need until it actually comes along… You could be living one life one minute and something massively changes and you realise you don’t necessarily have the tools or the experience to be able to tackle that.”

The couple talked to four guests about their experiences for the show.

They included Antonio Ferreria, 23, a young mental health advocate who recently used his own experience to advise writers on TV soap EastEnders about a storyline featuring a young black man with schizophrenia.

Kate, 40, asked how he and the others looked after their own mental health.

When he replied that the main thing was to be aware of it and accept that not every day was going to be “roses and sunflowers”, the Princess replied: “There’s no right or wrong, that’s the thing as well.”
