The WHO said: “Although the global prevalence of the Mu variant among sequenced cases has declined and is currently below 0.1 percent, the prevalence in Colombia (39 percent) and Ecuador (13 percent) has consistently increased.”
The news comes after scientists in South Africa published a paper about the C.1.2 variant – the most mutated variant discovered to date.
The WHO has designated five variants as VOIs, including the Mu variant.
These are the Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda and Mu variants.
The viruses have all demonstrated genetic changes that could affect their transmissibility, ability to resist vaccines, disease severity or were “identified to cause significant community transmission”.
