Tottenham have made a shock U-turn in their pursuit of a new manager with Paulo Fonseca’s impending appointment falling through at the last minute and Gennaro Gattuso now the top choice, according to reports. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been searching for Jose Mourinho’s successor since the Portuguese coach was sacked in April.
Talks have been held with a number of managers with Antonio Conte emerging as the top candidate.
The ex-Inter Milan boss though turned down Tottenham’s offer with Fonseca then seen as their ideal second option.
The former Roma manager had agreed personal terms on a contract with Tottenham and an announcement was reportedly expected to take place this week.
But The Athletic now report that talks have broken down between Spurs and Fonseca.
