Seyed Moosavi, the director of the Islamic Centre for England, made the comments in a speech to his followers on social media. The director and personal representative of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, also condemned women who remove their hijabs for spreading “poison”.

He said: “We do not expect any good from the soldiers of Satan but we are the lovers of Allah.

“We try to protect our religion, to protect the truth.

“One of the teachings of Islam is hijab, isn’t it?

“They [the protesters] are against the teaching of Islam.

“Clearly they come [from] outside and say we are against this sort of teaching of Islam . . . if they have an effect on our life then it will be just like a poison.”

Demonstrations have spread across Iran following the funeral of Mahsa Amini, 22 who died after her arrest by the morality police for her “inappropriate dress” .

There was also a protest outside the Maida Vale-based charity which is located in a former cinema.

The centre is one of the leading Shia Muslim mosques in the UK and is part of a network of organisations considered to be close to Tehran which includes the Islamic Human Rights Commission.

However, Kasra Aarabi, from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, tweeted that the Government should take action against the centre.

He said; “The UK govt must take action against the Islamic Centre of England.

“It’s clear the views propagated at the centre are a direct threat to British values & citizens.

“The centre should be shut down & Khamenei’s representatives should be expelled.”
