The spokesman tweeted:The Jo Cox Foundation is horrified to hear the news of the attack on Sir David Amess MP. We are thinking of him, his family and loved ones at this distressing time.” Ms Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was stabbed and shot to death days before the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Thomas Nair, 53, was subsequently jailed for life for her murder.

Her husband Brendan described the stabbing of Sir David Amess as “as cowardly as it gets”.

He tweeted: “Attacking our elected representatives is an attack on democracy itself.

“There is no excuse, no justification. It is as cowardly as it gets.”

Mr Amess, 69, the Tory MP for Southend West, was stabbed several times in a church by a man who walked into a meeting with voters from his electoral district, according to witnesses.

Police said a man had been arrested after the stabbing.

Mr Amess’s office confirmed he had been stabbed but gave no further details.

John Lamb, a local councillor at the scene, said: “He was stabbed several times.

“We’re not sure how serious it is but it’s not looking good.”

Mr Amess was first elected to parliament to represent Basildon in 1983, and then stood for election in Southend West in 1997.

A practising Catholic, his website lists his main interests are “animal welfare and pro-life issues.”

The stabbing at Amess’ meeting with constituents has echoes of a 2010 case when Labour lawmaker Stephen Timms survived a stabbing in his constituency office.
