Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not “universally revered” and some think “they have got a bit of an attitude”, Montecito residents have told Express.co.uk. The Duke, 38, and the Duchess of Sussex, 41, relocated to the star-studded neighbourhood after leaving Royal Family duties in 2020. The royal couple are raising their two children, three-year-old Archie and Lilibet, one, at their sprawling chateau.
The house is reported to boast a private gym, cinema, spa and tennis court, as well as Archie and Lilibet’s own playground.
On Tuesday, Express.co.uk visited the beachfront town and spoke to local residents in the street.
Katie, a retired university lecturer, said the Sussexes settling down in the celebrity-packed Montecito has left many residents “divided”.
She remarked: “A lot of people think, ‘yeah fun’, but a lot of people think, ‘they have got a bit of an attitude’.
“I do not think they are universally revered.”
He added from outside his workplace, Mountain Air Sports, that the Duke and Duchess “keep themselves to themselves”.
He continued: “That’s why they live here. It is a pretty mellow town.”
It is also one in which the residents “treat the celebrities who live here just like anybody else”.
But new reports suggest the Duke and Duchess could be looking to relocate from Montecito, which boasts celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom and Ariana Grande.
The couple may be eyeing up the exclusive community of Hope Ranch, a matter of miles down the road from their current residence.
But royal biographer Tina Brown said the “super rich” Hope Ranch would be a “wholly different game” for the Sussex family.
She said during the Henley Literary Festival: “In Montecito, their $14 million mansion is a humble cottage compared to what these other people have.”
