It also claims Harry, 37, had hopes of the two couples becoming close but that it was a “long way off” reality. Despite tense relations between the royals, Meghan, 40 gave Kate, 39, and six other friends a bracelet in 2018. After reports of a spat between the two, one author has claimed the gift was meant to be a peace offering.

The bracelet had been designed by Californian jeweller Lisette Polny.

Indeed, Andrew Morton praised the two women for being so professional while rumours swirled of their rocky relationship.

In his updated version of ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, Mr Morton claimed, despite the peace offering, there was little chance for the two to develop a friendship.

He writes: “The spat concerning the bridesmaids’ outfits now behind them, Meghan had since given Kate and her six closest friends gold bracelets designed by Californian jeweller Lisette Polny as a thank-you for their help and support.

“It was an elegant peace offering, both women professional enough to know that there was no gain in showing dissent or disdain.”

Mr Morton added: “It was a practical matter as much as anything. Kate spent weekends and holidays at Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ country home in Norfolk, while Meghan and Harry were approximately three hours’ drive away, living in a large, remote, rented property on the Great Tew Estate in Oxfordshire.

“Harry’s dream of two united happy families seemed a long way off.”

In the lead up to her marriage to Harry, rumours had swirled that Kate and Meghan had argued over a bridesmaid fitting.

She told the US TV icon: “Kate is a good person.

“I have seen so much of this idea of polarity – but if you love me you don’t need to hate her, and if you love her you don’t need to hate me.”

Last year, Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step down as senior royals.

Earlier this year, the pair confirmed their departure, cementing their new lives in California.

Since then, the Sussexes have not returned to the UK as a pair.

Harry did return for Prince Philip’s funeral in April and again to unveil a statue for his mother in July.
