The institute said: “All this knowledge is especially relevant at the surveillance and civil protection level, as there is a set of active faults in the region similar to the one that caused the 1755 earthquake that may have the potential to generate earthquakes with possible effects on the Spanish coast that are larger than previously thought.
“This is why the authors conclude that the seismic and tsunami hazard associated with these structures should be urgently re-evaluated.”
The death and destruction caused by the 1775 earthquake were not limited to just Lisbon.
Nearby areas such as Cadiz and Huelva were also affected by the disaster.
The earthquake also took a major toll on Portugal’s economy, costing between 32 and 48 percent of the country’s GDP.
