“Many people are not aware of spatial-orientation being so common but people with dementia get very easily disoriented and that leads to losing one’s bearings or getting lost.”

The DVLA warns drivers “may be able to drive” with dementia but must contact the DVLA as soon as they are diagnosed.

Motorists who do not inform the DVLA about medical conditions which affects their driving can be fined up to £1,000.

They said it was “difficult to assess driving ability in people with dementia” but said this was usually assessed by using medical reports.
