Along with endless affairs and long-lost relatives, serial killers are a soap staple. The initial reaction is ‘not again’ as soon as producers unleash one on us. But, let’s face it, if the choice is that or another tedious storyline about trolling or parking, we’ll take the serial killer any day.
In EastEnders it’s only a matter of time before Gray, a burning cauldron of rage, strikes again having already dispatched Chantelle and Tina. But who will be his next victim? Cheating Chelsea? Whining Whitney? Or interfering mother-in-law Karen?
And with Janine Butcher back in town, he has some serious serial killer competition on the Square. She’s already done away with ex-husbands Barry and Michael, as well as Danielle Jones.
As with all serial killers, Emmerdale’s Meena appeared fairly normal at first but is morphing into a psycho who, having killed her best friend and Leanna, now has Victoria and her own sister in her sights.
Coronation Street has been serial killer free for a while although, given time, I’d say that young Hope could be filling the void.
EASTENDERS: JANINE’S FIERY HOMECOMING

Janine (pictured) bursts in declaring herself to be a reformed character, as Kat is making her case in EastEnders
Kat sits Tommy down and tells him that Alfie isn’t his real dad – Uncle Michael is. At least, having had so many secret siblings thrust upon him over the years, he’ll be used to the shock. Kat then goes to the courthouse and tells social workers that she should care for Scarlett, who should never see her real mum – Janine – again.
A plan Phil isn’t keen on. In fairness he now has so many children, grandchildren and stepchildren, he must lose track.
As Kat is making her case, Janine bursts in declaring herself to be a reformed character. As if. She soon proves otherwise when she heads to The Vic to tell the locals exactly what she thinks of them.
When Scarlett goes missing Kat is convinced that Janine is responsible, but it turns out that Tommy is hiding her at Phil’s house. Janine finds them, a scuffle breaks out and a fire starts.
Welcome back Janine. That’s quite a re-entrance!
When Vi points out that Linda’s baby bump is very big for the stage she’s at, Rainie gets suspicious and, at the end of the week, Jack demands to know the truth: is Max really the father of Linda’s baby?
CORONATION STREET: COMEUPPANCE FOR COREY?

Nina attends the verdict for the court case surrounding Seb’s murder with support from Roy (both pictured) in Coronation Street
The wheels of justice move at lightning speed in Weatherfield. Not only has the court case for Seb’s suspected killers come around in record time, but the trial itself is all over in a matter of days.
As the jury are sent out to consider their verdict, a distraught Abi urges them not to believe Corey’s lies and sets about trying to find evidence that Corey’s dad bribed witnesses.
Imran’s a lone solicitor up against a huge defence team led by barrister Sabeen, but as he delivers his final argument has he done enough to convince the jury that Kelly is innocent and Corey is the murderer? Nina, in full Goth gear, is there to hear the verdict with Roy on hand to support her.
Eileen learns the truth about Phelan’s ashes and George, old romantic fool that he is, uses the opportunity to get closer to her. After disposing of Phelan’s remains, he asks Eileen if she’d like to take their relationship to the next level.
If the next level is a date anywhere other than the funeral parlour or pub, Eileen should go for it. If George hasn’t killed anyone or slept with her best friend then he’s an improvement on all her exes.
Alina books a trip to Romania so her family can meet Tyrone – and his uncomfortably tight trousers. Fiz encourages him to go, saying that he needs a break. Don’t we all.
Let’s hope they stay away for a very long time because, as Corrie couples go, this pair have zero chemistry or appeal.
EMMERDALE: STEP UP, DOC

Leyla admits she has had a miscarriage after being confronted by Liam (both pictured), who was convinced she had been hiding something in Emmerdale
Convinced Leyla is hiding something, Liam confronts her, and she admits she’s had a miscarriage. Will the doc, consumed by grief, step up to support his wife?
Cathy admits to her brother that she’s responsible for April’s online bullying – something the rest of us guessed weeks ago. Hopefully that will bring an end to a storyline that has dragged on far too long.
It feels like they’ve been on only a handful of dates, but it’s enough for Charles to tell Andrea he loves her. Oh, come on, we all know that as soon as Manpreet returns from Ibiza those two are going to get it on.
