Angus Robertson met Simona Leskovar, Slovenian Ambassador to the UK, who currently holds the rotating European Union Council Presidency. The influential presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months and they determine the topics and major issues to be discussed among members.

Minutes released under Freedom of Information laws said Mr Robertson, a former SNP Westminster leader, said Scotland was “very proud to be European” to the top diplomat.

Despite Mr Robertson stressing they were “currently focussed on tackling the COVID-19 pandemic”, the Scottish Government minister said: “Recent elections to the Scottish Parliament returned a majority in favour of an independent Scotland rejoining the EU.”

The meeting took place on August 3rd on the day Scottish Nationalist ministers announced a move to beyond Level Zero of Scotland’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Most Covid restrictions were lifted on this date but Ms Sturgeon ordered indefinite mask-wearing and threatened new lockdowns and travel bans.

Donald Cameron MSP, Scottish Conservative Constitution spokesman said: “All our focus should be on our recovery from Covid and rebuilding our communities.

“The last thing Scotland needs is another independence referendum.

“On the day Nicola Sturgeon was announcing a move beyond Level Zero, it appears Angus Robertson was more interested in talking up the prospect of a separate Scotland joining the European Union.

“Vital time that could be spent on protecting jobs, remobilising our NHS and tackling Scotland’s drugs death scandal is instead being spent by SNP Ministers on their usual independence obsession.”

In response, a Scottish Government source said: “We will always stand up for Scotland’s interests and make no apology for doing so.

“The Tories have dragged Scotland out of the EU against the democratic will of the Scottish people.”
