Sea Patrol actor Ian Stenlake is charged with allegedly assaulting police after a vehicle crash – as friend blames the ’embarrassing’ incident on Covid shutdowns
TV and theatre Actor Ian Stenlake, known for playing commanding officer Mike Flynn in Nine drama Sea Patrol, has been charged with various offences after an altercation with police and paramedics in Sydney’s eastern suburbs earlier this year.
The Helpmann Award nominee and father of three, 52, allegedly threatened ambulance workers who were trying to assess him after a vehicle crash at a property on Abbey Street in Randwick at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 20, leading to police being called to the scene.
After officers arrived, Mr Stenlake allegedly verbally assaulted a male and female constable as they tried to assist him into an ambulance and he was arrested.

He was conveyed Prince of Wales Hospital under police guard and was then taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault, and resisting or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.
Mr Stenlake was also issued a Penalty Infringement Notice for allegedly ‘not complying with the current [Covid] health orders’.
A NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: ‘About 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, emergency services were called to Abbey Street, Randwick, following reports a man was threatening NSW Ambulance paramedics.
‘Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command attended and found a 52-year-old man being aggressive and abusive towards paramedics, who were attempted to assess him following a crash.
‘Police attempted to speak with the man, but he was aggressive and abusive towards the officers. While attempting to assist the man to an ambulance, the man assaulted a male Constable and a female Constable, before he was arrested.
‘He was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.
‘Upon his release from hospital about 9pm (Tuesday, July 20, 2021), the man was taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm (x 2), common assault (x 2) and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

‘He was also issued a PIN for not complying with the current health orders. The man was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday 21 July 2021.
‘The officers did not require medical assistance.’
A friend of the actor told The Daily Telegraph Mr Stenlake was ‘significantly embarrassed’ by what had happened, and blamed his alleged actions on the effects of the Covid ‘shutdown of the entertainment industry’ and the wider community.
He will next appear at Waverley Local Court at 9:30am on Wednesday, September 15.
