King Charles III’s coronation will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, just eight months after his accession following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey, London, in the presence of the Royal Family, MPs, peers and foreign heads of state. Some MPs have called for a bank holiday to mark the occasion, but do you agree? Vote in our poll.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer backed calls for the early May bank holiday – on Monday, May 1 – to be moved by a week to give people a long weekend over the coronation.
His spokesperson said it “would certainly be a good way for the country to celebrate the coronation”.
Tory former cabinet minister David Jones told the Daily Mail on Tuesday, October 11: “To combine the two events would be welcomed by the entire nation. It would make a very special memory for all of us.”
Another Tory former minister, Tobias Ellwood added: “A bank holiday would help strengthen our transition to a new era.”
And former Labour frontbencher Khalid Mahmood told the paper: “We can move the holiday back to the coronation weekend. We have a unique system with the monarchy and an independent parliament – I would back Britons having a three-day weekend to mark the occasion.”

The coronation – which will also see Camila, Queen Consort crowned – will be the first held in the UK in almost 70 years, with Queen Elizabeth II crowned a year after her accession on June 2 1953.
The occasion will also be the first coronation held on a Saturday since Edward VII in 1902.
Charles will become the oldest person to be crowned in British history at the age of 74 and has pledged to have a simpler ceremony.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”
Two additional bank holidays were awarded this year to mark royal events – the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and state funeral.
