Sophie and her husband Prince Edward have addressed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah which was aired in March – with the Countess questioning if the British public even knew who the American host was. The royal couple gave their first major interview together to the Telegraph Magazine and when the subject of the infamous Meghan and Harry broadcast was raised, the Earl of Wessex quipped “Oprah who?”
Speaking from their Bagshot House in Surrey, a chuckling Sophie added: “Yes, what interview?”
Royal expert Camilla Tominey then told the pair the Archbishop of Canterbury reportedly had a long conversation with Oprah at the Sussexes wedding in 2018 and did not know who she was.
Sophie said: “You know, if you’re not into chat shows, there’s no reason why you should know who she is. Certainly not in this country, anyway.”
The 56-year-old also revealed she had a “lengthy chat” with Harry after Prince Philip’s funeral in April.
It was the first time the Duke had returned to the UK since quitting the firm and that interview with Oprah, where the couple claimed the royal institution failed to support their well-being and accused an unnamed member of the Royal Family of racism, something Buckingham Palace denies.
In the wide-ranging chat, the Countess of Wessex said the royals are “still a family no matter what happens”.
The couple have taken on a more frontline role with The Firm since Megxit and Prince Edward said they are “flattered” by the new responsibilities.
Sophie added: “Inevitably the spotlight and the focus falls on younger members as time goes on.
“We’ve plodded along doing what we’re doing, hopefully doing it well. And then all of a sudden there’s a bit of a hiatus and things have changed a bit.”
