The Duke of Cambridge, who is President of the Football Association, issued a stern statement on Twitter after black players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were subjected to vile racist attacks on social media. While many royal fans welcomed his public statement, those fiercely loyal to the Duchess of Sussex have used the row to hark back to the racism storm which engulfed the Royal Family earlier this year.
Some said William, 39, had failed to adequately address claims made by Meghan and Harry that their son’s skin colour had been an issue for an unnamed member of the Firm, who they said made racist comments about the baby before he was born.
Days after their allegations were aired, William said “we are very much not a racist family” when quizzed by a reporter.
But some fans clearly feel he should have gone further to publicly show solidarity with Meghan and Harry, a year after the pair stepped down from their senior royal roles.
William’s statement on Twitter read: “I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match.
“It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour.
“It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable.”
He signed off the message with his “W” initial.
Rewire News Group’s senior editor and law and policy specialist Imani Gandy, whose Twitter handle is @AngryBlackLady, tweeted in response: “Oooh now do the racist abuse aimed at Meghan Markle. pulls up chair.”
Another person said: “Whilst I appreciate Prince William speaking out about racist comments towards football players, where was this support when Meghan Markle was being bullied, even contemplating ending her life due to the comments?
And yet a third said the black community “would have welcomed this statement from William had he condemned racism against Meghan as he’s the future king and also released his transformation report and condemned racism in the UK”.
Writing for The Root, Tonja Renee Stidhum said Prince William and Kate should have issued a “thorough statement and true atonement for” the alleged racist comments Meghan said a member of the Firm had made about little Archie.
Addressing the Cambridges, she said: “Or will you be silent/silenced about that one? peers over glasses.”

7.53am update: Queen crisis as Jamaica plans to send letter demanding slavery reparations: ‘Well overdue’
The Queen is facing a royal crisis as Jamaica is planning to send a letter demanding slavery reparations.
The Commonwealth nation is set to ask Britain for billions of pounds of compensation for the Atlantic slave trade in the former British colony.
Jamaican politician Olivia Grange, who is the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, revealed a petition had gained approval from Jamaica’s National Council on Reparations.
She added it will be filed pending advice from the attorney general and three legal teams.
The attorney general will then send it to the Queen.
She said: “We are hoping for reparatory justice in all forms that one would expect if they are to really ensure that we get justice from injustices to repair the damages that our ancestors experienced.
“Our African ancestors were forcibly removed from their home and suffered unparalleled atrocities in Africa to carry out forced labour to the benefit of the British Empire.
“Redress is well overdue.”
