The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have distanced themselves from the Finding Freedom book, written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. They have also made it clear its authors, who rely on unnamed sources, do not speak for them. However, an updated edition of the biography, which is due to be published next week, has reportedly claimed the couple thought about “sharing this detail” in their explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The authors wrote that the “unaddressed” allegations “have continued to threaten the Royal Family’s image around the world” and “could no doubt bring down the monarchy”.
During the interview in March, Meghan told Oprah that sharing the person’s identity would be “very damaging to them” after saying an unnamed royal made a remark about her son Archie’s skin tone before he was born.
She also suggested he may not have been given a royal title due to his skin colour.
Oprah later confirmed Harry said the unnamed royal was neither the Queen or Prince Philip, who was in hospital recovering from heart surgery when the interview was aired.
Buckingham Palace later responded “some recollections may vary” to the interview.
A few days after it was aired, Prince William also publicly said the Royal Family was “not a racist family”.
According to the Daily Mail, the book also claims members of the Royal Family are still “raw” with their emotions following the Oprah interview, with a source close to the couple being quoted as saying “it will force people to talk in order for the healing to begin”.
The source also reportedly told the authors that “it will take time to get past the hurt”.
They added: “There has to be some acknowledgement of understanding about what the Sussexes went through in order for there to be progress.”
