Buckingham Palace said it will investigate after it was reported allegations of “bullying” were made against Meghan Markle by former royal staff. Royal expert Julie Montagu discussed the bullying allegations made against the Duchess on the Channel 5 documentary Harry and Meghan: 3 Troubled Years. She suggested it was a way of the Royal Family “defending” itself ahead of the couple’s bombshells interview.
Ms Montagu said: “Once we knew the air data of this Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry, all of a sudden the palace came out saying they were investigating these reports.
“Here we have in one sense the Sussexes against the entire Royal Family and if you like the Royal Family in one way or another trying to defend themselves without having to publicly open up which we know they will never do.”
The palace said in a statement in March: “We are clearly very concerned about allegations in The Times following claims made by former staff of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article.
“Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned.

“The Royal Household had had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace.”
It followed a story by The Times relating to bullying accusations when Meghan and Prince Harry were still frontline members of the Royal Family in 2018.
The Duchess of Sussex issued a statement over the allegations.
Her spokesman said: “The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.
“She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good.”
Meghan’s spokesman told to The Times: “Let’s just call this what it is — a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation.
“We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of The Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet.
“It’s no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining The Duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and The Duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years.”

The statement added the “defamatory claims” made by The Times have been addressed in full in a legal letter to the newspaper.
The royal couple’s interview with Ms Winfry aired just days after the statement.
Meghan told the chatshow host that there were “concerns” about Archie’s skin colour.
Harry later clarified this did not come from the Queen or Prince Philip.
