Five tourists are trapped 200 feet underground at the Grand Canyon Caverns after an elevator broke down, according to officials. The group is approximately 21 floors deep at the Arizona tourist attraction, where an underground hotel suite and restaurant is located. Jon Paxton, of the Cococino County Sheriff Office, said rescuers were considering whether to hoist the visitors to safety through the elevator shaft on Monday night.
The caverns – a few miles east of Peach Springs – are among the largest in the US.
The trapped tourists have medical conditions which prevented them from climbing the 20 flights of stairs to safety, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jon Paxton said.
Investigators tried to fix the elevator to an external generator, but this was unsuccessful, he added.
A night in The Cavern Suite costs $1000.00 (£883.52) for two.
It sleeps up to six – and the addition of more guests costs $100 per head.
Mr Paxton told CNN: “Yesterday five folks were exiting the caverns when the elevator stopped working.
“Believing it was an electrical problem, a generator was brought in.
