He’s not the only top player in doubt ahead of the US Open, with many concerned for Federer as the Swiss star also pulled out of the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments, citing his ongoing knee injury.
The former world No 1 has barely played any tournaments since tennis resumed after the coronavirus pandemic, and planned end his 2020 season after the Australian Open even if the tour had not been suspended, with the knee still bothering him.
He underwent two surgeries on it last year and has played just five tournaments so far in 2021, including an impressive quarter-final run at Wimbledon.
Federer hasn’t played since his appearance at the All England Club, where he crashed out in straight sets to Hubert Hurkacz and was handed the first bagel of his career at the prestigious grass court major, and uncertainties remain around both him and his rival Nadal with the US Open looming.
