The 95-year-old monarch visited the set of ITV’s Coronation Street today for the first time in 39 years. This must be a treat for Her Majesty as she is said to be a fan of the show. In fact, back in 2003, when US President George W Bush came to the UK on a state visit and she could not watch the soap opera due to the security measures in place, it was reported that she was disgruntled about it.
A BBC Radio 2 listener emailed in to tell the story of how she had read this and decided to record it for Her Majesty.
Sara Cox read out the email, saying: “In 2003, President Bush was doing a state visit and it said in the papers that the Queen was cheesed off because she would be missing Corrie due to security equipment interfering with her aerial.
“I recorded Corrie for her for the week and sent it to her on VHS.”
Sarah then told listeners they were also sent a copy of a letter the Queen sent back to express her gratitude via Buckingham Palace.

The letter read: “Dear Miss Butler. The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for the video recording that you made for Her Majesty during the state visit of President Bush.
“The Queen greatly appreciated your kind thoughts and thanks you very much for thinking of her as you did.”
The Queen last visited the set of Coronation Street in 1982 with her late husband Prince Philip during her Silver Jubilee tour.
She met some of the famous faces including William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, Eileen Derbyshire, who played Emily Bishop and Anne Kirkbride, who played Diedre Barlow.
The monarch described the long-running television show as “part of the fabric” of society, adding that she thought it “rather remarkable” that it had been running for so long.
She was on the famous Manchester set for 40 minutes, where she was greeted by a red carpet and the flag-waving cast and crew.
Her Majesty even nipped into the famous Rovers Return Inn, where the Duke of Edinburgh had a pint poured for him nearly 40 years ago.
Ms Knox told the Queen: “Thank you for coming, you’ve given us all such a lift.
“You’re like a ray of sunshine. We all absolutely adore you. The world adores you.”
Speaking to newcomer Charlotte Jordanl, who plays Daisy Midgeley, she was told the character is a “troublemaker”.
The Queen replied: “I suppose life is a trouble.”
The Queen is not the only royal to have stepped foot on the Coronation Street cobbles.
Prince Charles made a cameo in the soap’s special live episode in December 2000.
He was being presented to Audrey, who was a Councillor at the time.
The footage had been filmed earlier in the day while Charles visited Granada Studios.
