Queen braves loneliest Trooping the Colour – stoic monarch marks birthday without Philip

The Queen is to step out today in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle to celebrate her official birthday. This is the second year Her Majesty renounces to the Trooping the Colour parade in central London due to the ongoing pandemic.

However, this year will also be the first Trooping the Colour she marks without her husband Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh died on April 9 at the royals’ residence in Berkshire.

Last year, Prince Philip did not stand by the Queen’s side as she watched a streamlined ceremony in the Quadrangle.

But he was inside the castle and BBC commentator Huw Edwards even suggested he may have been looking over the Quadrangle from one of the castle’s windows.

Today’s parade will play out in a similar way as last year’s.

The only difference will be that, unlike in 2020, the Queen will be in the company of one family member, her cousin Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.
