The Prince of Wales invited the Band of the Coldstream Guards to play instrumental versions of the England fans anthems Three Lions and Sweet Caroline at Clarence House on Tuesday. A video of the Euro 2020 renditions was posted on Charles and Camilla’s social media accounts.

But some Twitter users questioned why Charles did not make such a gesture for Wales and Scotland when they were still in the competition.

One commented: “I don’t recall you offering any support for Wales or Scotland.

“Does this mean those two countries no longer require to pay for you or any other royal?”

Another wrote: “Prince of wales my a**e!”

A third posted the head in hands emoji and added: “Prince of Wales.”

One more said: “Another great use of taxpayers money. Independence now!”

However, most Twitter users were delighted by the post on Charles and Camilla’s social media accounts.

One commented: “Even as a Scotsman, this is just awesome. Good luck England.”

Charles’s show of support comes as England take on Denmark at Wembley at 8pm tonight.

The soldiers, in their pristine bright red tunics and bearskin hats, stood in the grounds of the heir to the throne’s London residence, trumpeting out the melodies on their brass instruments.

Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were absent as they are carrying out a week of engagements in Wales, whose squad was knocked out by Denmark in the last 16.

A royal source said of the match: “Both Their Royal Highnesses will be closely following the outcome.”

Three Lions, with its popular “it’s coming home” lyric, was written by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner with the Lightning Seeds in 1996.

It continues to be the anthem for England fans during major tournaments.

Supporters have also been chanting Sweet Caroline – the 1969 hit by American songwriter Neil Diamond.
