Robert Lacey delved into the early years of Prince Harry and Prince William and their relationship as children in his updated book Battle of Brothers. The young brothers were known for their bond during their childhood and teenage years.
And their mother Princess Diana wanted her sons to remain close throughout their lives, Mr Lacey wrote.
In his book, he quoted Simone Simmons, a psychic the Princess of Wales used to consult, saying Diana once made the boys promise to always remain “best friends”.
Ms Simmons claimed the Princess of Wales told her sons: “You must promise me that you will always be each other’s best friends.
“And never let anyone come between you.”
Following Princess Diana’s death, Prince William and Prince Harry went on supporting one another in school and with their royal work.
However, their relationship turned sour in recent years.
The Duke of Sussex publicly acknowledged the divide between him and his brother during an interview with Tom Bradby broadcasted in October 2019.
At the time, he said he and William would always be there for one another but they were now “on different paths”.

Harry spoke in similar terms of his bond with the Duke of Cambridge during his interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in early March.
Repeating they are now on different paths, he also said their relationship is one of “space” at the moment.
Princess Diana never foresaw this split, according to her biographer Andrew Morton.
He told Express.co.uk in April: “She specifically said to me that Prince Harry’s was William’s wingman.
“She never thought for a second there would be a split between them because they were such big friends.”
William and Harry are to come together to celebrate their mother’s life and legacy on July 1.
Then, the brothers are expected to unveil the statue of Princess Diana they commissioned in 2017.
The statue, created by Ian Rank-Broadley, will be positioned in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace.
While details of the unveiling ceremony are still under wrap, Prince Harry is believed to be preparing to leave California and travel across the pond.
As he arrives from the US, he will be expected to quarantine from arrival.
He is believed he will spend his days in self-isolation at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, which remains his and Meghan’s official residence in the UK despite being now occupied by Princess Eugenie, Jack Brooksbank and their son August.
