The paperback edition of Finding Freedom, featuring a new epilogue, claims palace aides were instructed to brief the press that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not want a title for their son, who was born in May 2019. But according to the book by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, it is claimed Meghan and Harry did want the option of a title for Archie.

The biography claims the “differential treatment” the Sussexes believed their son had received was a “major sting” to them.

The book says: “Palace aides were actually instructed to brief the press that the couple did not want a title for Archie.

“In reality, the couple did want the option, given that it would provide their son with a level of security that only comes with a title.

“The differential treatment the couple felt had been bestowed upon their son was a major sting to Harry and Meghan.”

The couple brought up the issue of a title for Archie during their controversial Oprah Winfrey interview in March.

Meghan said: “They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol.”

However, Archie was not entitled to be a prince when he was born because of rules set down by King George V more than 100 years ago.

According to the book, some members of the Royal Family were “quietly pleased” Meghan missed Prince Philip’s funeral because they did not want a “circus” or Harry’s wife “creating a spectacle”.

The biography also claims the couple had no regrets over quitting their royal roles and that Meghan had found her tell-all TV interview “liberating”.

The Sussexes quit royal duties in March 2020 for a new life in America.

They are now living in California with two-year-old Archie and their baby daughter Lili.

Lawyers for Harry and Meghan have distanced themselves from Finding Freedom, describing it as unauthorised, and saying the authors “do not speak for our clients and seem to rely on unnamed sources”.

    Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
