Ms Truss’ credibility suffered as newly-appointed Chancellor Jeremy Hunt reversed almost all decisions announced as part of the mini-budget on Monday. In addition to his emergency statement, Mr Hunt will share more financial measures as scheduled on October 31.
There is a growing demand among Tory backbenchers for Ms Truss to resign, with Sir Charles Walker telling Sky News’ Beth Rigby: “I think her position is untenable. She has put her colleagues, the country, through a huge amount of unnecessary pain and upset and worry. We don’t need a disruptor in No 10. We need a uniter.”
The former vice-chairman of the 1922 Committee claimed that the situation “can only be remedied” with a new Prime Minister, giving Ms Truss a “week or two” left in office.
Four more MPs have added their voices to the public called for Ms Truss’ resignation with Angela Richardson, Jamie Wallis, Andrew Bridgen and Crispin Blunt speaking out.

Experienced minister Mr Hunt (7/2) is the second favourite to take over, after being described as the “caretaker Prime Minister” after being brought in as Chancellor to stabilise the economy. He said that he believes Ms Truss will still be Prime Minister at Christmas, telling Sky News that Conservative MPs should “give her a chance”.
The next most popular candidates with odds of 6/1 are Penny Mordaunt, who stepped in for Ms Truss in the House of Commons on Monday, and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson (20/1) is also a popular candidate, with many suggesting he returns to frontline politics just months after being forced to resign. In addition, Home Secretary Suella Braverman has odds of 50/1 and Mr Kwarteng 80/1.
