His wild suggestion has unsurprisingly been met with mass disagreement ahead of the Group D curtain-closer.

“Imagine wanting your team to get gubbed, what a strange character you are,” another tweeted.
A third added: “Absolutely rubbish statement. You can’t play about with trying for ‘easier’ routes. In the last tournament we got knocked out by Iceland.”
Another cited England’s potential loss of home advantage, stating: “But we won’t be on the easier side of the draw.
“Also, we won’t get to play the rest of our games at Wembley. The seemingly easy path is not always the best path.”
