The chairman of the PRA has warned that fuel shortages are getting worse in some parts of the country amid the fuel panic buying frenzy. Brian Madderson said it remains a “really big problem” in London and the South East.
He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “In London and the South East and possibly parts of eastern England, if anything it had got worse.”
It comes following news that the military will begin delivering petrol across the UK from Monday.
The PRA, which represents nearly 5,500 of the UK’s 8,300 petrol stations, said Scotland, the north of England and parts of the Midlands had seen a “distinct improvement”, but the situation has worsened in London and the South East.
The current fuel crisis gripping the UK has seen lengthy queues at petrol forecourts as motorists scrabble to find supplies of petrol and diesel, with many causing congestions on roads as they visit numerous sites to find fuel.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the situation across the UK was “stabilising” and that measures including the deployment of the military will help improve the situation further.
The deployment will see 200 servicemen and women, 100 of them drivers, providing “temporary” support to ease pressure on stations.
