Supporters believe Ms Mordaunt is a unifying candidate.

Keighley MP Robbie Moore, a 2019 Red Waller, said: “We need a fresh start, a united party and strong leadership which is solely focused on the national interest – to deliver our manifesto pledges and win the next GE. That’s why I am backing @PennyMordaunt
Penny Mordaunt has become the first candidate to declare in the Tory leadership election. The Leader of the House, who narrowly missed out on getting intot he final run-off, over the summer Tweeted that she had been persuaded to make a second bid. She said: “I’ve been encouraged by support from colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership in the national interest. I’m running to be the leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister – to unite our country, deliver our pledges and win the next General Election.”
Ms Mordaunt is currently running in third place among Tory MPs for the 100 nominations needed to go to the members vote.
She has 21 supporters while Boris Johnson has 62 but the frontrunner is former Chancellor Rishi Sunak with 78.
Mr Johnson has been boosted by support from three current cabinet ministers – Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg, Defence Secretqary Ben Wallace and Communities Secretary Simon Clarke.
But Ms Mordaunt will hope that making an early declaration will allow her to gain some extra momentum.
