Mr Bercow who served as Speaker for 19 years revealed he joined the Labour party a few weeks ago as he shared their values and ethics. The former Speaker, who has since labelled Brexit as the UK’s biggest mistake since the Second World War, insisted the Labour Party is the only “vehicle” to oust the Tory party.

Mr Bercow was snubbed from receiving a peerage when he stepped down last year, making him the first Commons Speaker in 230 years not to be nominated for the accolade.

Now, many people have claimed the former Speaker only joined the Opposition Party in a bid to secure a peerage.

Former Brexit Party leader, Nigel Farage, tweeted: “Bercow backed the Remain sabotage campaign in Parliament and now joins the Labour Party.

    “He loves a sinking ship.”

Tory commentator Darren Grimes said: “John Bercow, so desperate for a peerage, defects to the Labour Party, as if the electorate can’t see through such desperate acts.

    “How pathetic.”

Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley and Outwood, tweeted: “Former speaker #Bercow the arch Remainer who tried to stop #Brexit feels so at home in the Labour Party under #Starmer!

“It speaks volumes about how out of touch the Labour Party are with northern working-class communities.”

“Most of us thought he had joined them years ago.

“This is so he can be nominated as a Labour peer and join the HoL, and the Govt won’t be able to block it as we could while he was a ‘Conservative turned independent’ cynical & cunning.”

Former MEP Richard Tice said Mr Bercow’s defecting to Labour was “another reason to abolish the House of Lords”.

Another Twitter user wrote: “The Labour Party thought that only getting 1.6% in a by-election and losing their deposit was a bad start to their week.

“It’s ended with them gaining John Bercow.”

Someone else echoed: “Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Labour, John Bercow decides to defect to Labour.

    “They can keep him.

“Usually rats leave a sinking ship, in John Bercow’s case, it’s a rat joining a sinking ship.”

Another Twitter user added: “Another nail in Labour’s coffin. John Bercow has joined it.”
