The Scotland First Minister accused Westminster of trying to sabotage a future referendum by giving Scots in the whole of the United Kingdom a say on the country’s future. No10 is understood to be considering extending who can cast a ballot in a potential IndyRef2 as a condition of granting permission for a new vote.

The move would all but kill off the SNP’s hopes to tear apart the UK, with polling expert John Curtice saying the separatists would need to secure at least 54 percent support to win a referendum.

Criticising the plan to let all Scots have a vote on the future of the country, Ms Sturgeon said on social media: “I see the anti-independence campaign is trying to rig the rules of IndyRef2 again (tho in doing so they also concede that it’s going to happen).

“Maybe they should just argue their case on its merits and allow everyone who lives in Scotland to decide.”

The Prime Minister has ruled out any imminent vote on Scottish independence, saying now is “not the time” for a new referendum.

He has urged the Scottish Government to focus its attention on tackling the pandemic and re-building the economy after more than 12 months of devastation.

His language concedes there could be a fresh referendum in the future when the health and economic situation allows.

Mr Johnson softened his tone on the prospects of a future vote following the SNP’s Scottish Parliament election win in May.

Prior to the elections, the Prime Minister fiercely rejected suggestions of a new vote on independence in the months before the Scottish Parliament elections in May.

He said the 2014 referendum was a “once in a lifetime” ballot and the augments could not be re-run for years to come.
