Novak Djokovic joked he had a “really nice connection with the grass” during his second round win over Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon on Wednesday. Djokovic beat Anderson in straight sets on Centre Court 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The World No 1 professed his delight at playing in front of fans again but admitted he had never fallen over as much as he has in the first two rounds of the tournament.
Adrian Mannarino and Serena Williams both pulled out of the tournament on Tuesday following injuries they suffered after slipping on the SW19 surface.
Djokovic told the BBC: “We are used to playing in front of crowds but in the last 18 months that hasn’t been the case and I’m just super happy to see all of you guys on the court. It’s wonderful, thank you so much.
“Also I seem to be having a really nice connection with the grass.
“I don’t recall falling this much in the first two matches of Wimbledon but yeah I did have a connection with the crowd and the grass today, it’s very nice.”
Djokovic was delighted with his own performance, describing it as “almost flawless”.
He added: “I knew that Kevin was going to serve big and I was not going to have too many chances to break his serve.
“So I might as well try to play solid but not too risky. I’ve done much better than I thought I would do.
“I believe in myself but I mean it was really almost flawless performance today, very, very pleased.
“My coach is there, hopefully he doesn’t have any complaints about the performance today.”
