Walking is thirsty work – so Britons should head to North Yorkshire for a saunter.
That’s because it is the UK pub walk capital, named as such by AA Media, which revealed that it has 29 AA-rated inns and pubs located within five miles of the walking routes listed for the county on RatedTrips.com.
In second place, using this criterion, is Somerset with 26 AA-approved pubs close to walking routes, while third is Cumbria with 25 venues near trails.

AA-rated pubs near walking routes in top-ranked North Yorkshire include The Lister Arms in Malham, which the AA describes as ‘a traditional country inn with wood beams and open fires’, and the ‘high quality’ Golden Lion in Settle.
In second-place Somerset, the 26 AA-rated pubs near walking routes include The Hunters Rest in Clutton, which the AA says has a ‘cosy bar’, and The Bath Arms, which is described as having ‘excellent dining’.
Among the 25 AA-rated pubs near walking trails in third place Cumbria is Crosthwaite’s Punch Bowl Inn, which the AA says is ‘one of Lakeland’s homelier places’, and The Traveller’s Rest in Grasmere – a 500-year-old pub with ‘old world charm’.

These include The Thomas Lord in West Meon, which according to the AA is a ‘beautifully restored pub that has a bar decorated with cricketing memorabilia’, and The Jolly Drover in Liss, where guests can ‘enjoy the large log fire, secluded garden, a choice of real ales and home-cooked food’.
Rounding out the top five is Gloucestershire, with 22 AA-rated pubs within five miles of walking routes.
Sixth is Oxfordshire (21 pubs) and joint seventh is Devon and Kent (16 pubs).

The website features over 1,000 walking routes around the UK ‘enabling travellers to plan their itinerary wherever they’re looking to explore’.
