The seven-time world champion suffered serious brain injuries in December 2013, while skiing with his son in the French Alps. Schumacher has since remained largely out of the public eye with his wife, Corinna, assuming responsibility for his care.
A new Netflix documentary about the F1 legend is due to be released on September 15.
Vettel, who currently races for Aston Martin, spoke about the impact of Schumacher’s accident during an interview with Online Focus.
He said: “Of course it hurts to think about him and to know what condition he is in and how hard and how long he has been fighting.”
Vettel, currently 12th in the F1 world championship, also discussed how Schumacher helped inspire him.
“A lot of people who are close to him were involved, and I think everyone has contributed to it. I hope they did a great job.
“But I’m sure they did because the story that happened in real life is wonderful.
“He had an incredible career and I think he’s a wonderful person.”
Willi Weber, Schumacher’s former manager, is releasing a biography later this year.
His book, ‘Blood full of Gasoline’, has been published in German today.
Mr Weber uses it to claim Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, “cuts him out of her life” after Michael’s skiing accident.
He wrote: “To this day no phone call, no letter.
“On this day of overwhelming pain, she [Corinna] cuts me, I know that today, out of her life.
“Why am I just a worn tire that is no longer good for his wife after all these years?
“Why am I not allowed to visit Michael? What am I being punished for?”
