Met Office warning UPDATED: 3-day blitz of hazardous rain, lightning storms and floods

    Met Office forecasters have issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms spanning three days, and have now brought forward Friday’s warning. Now the warning is in effect from 6am, three hours earlier than the original 9am warning. Here are the latest updates.

    The warning area covers the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, South West England, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

    Starting at 6am on Friday, the warning is in place until 6am on Saturday morning.

    The Met Office warns: “A spell of quite prolonged and often heavy rain is expected to spread northwards into parts of England on Friday though there remains uncertainty in how far northwest this progresses.

    “This area of rain then clears away northeast on Saturday morning. Parts of East Anglia, the East Midlands and southeast England may see 20 to 40 mm of rain with a few sites potentially seeing 50 to 70 mm.

    “However, many parts will see much less rainfall. Some thunder and lightning is also possible, particularly in East Anglia, the East Midlands and southeast England but heavy rain is the main hazard.”

    Netweather warns these heavy, thundery downpours will spin off the low pressure and bring the threat of torrential downpours.

    Throughout Friday, these downpours will head northwards however there is some uncertainty of how far west they will travel.

    Met Office forecasters warn to expect:

    • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater or lightning strikes

    • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

    • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

    • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

    • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

    • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
