On Tuesday, foreign minister Heiko Maas called on the Chancellor to open up Germany, joining Andreas Gassen, head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. Mr Maas told Deutsche Presse-Agentur: “If everyone in Germany has been offered the vaccine, there is no longer any legal or political justification for any restrictions.

“This can be expected by August.”

This is following Mr Gassen’s comment that, if the country is fully vaccinated, there is no reason to hesitate.

“By September at the latest, a jab will have been offered to everyone who wants to be vaccinated, and almost all corona measures will have to go,” he said.

“Everyone can then decide for themselves whether to continue wearing a mask — but it should no longer be compulsory.”

Currently, more than 55 percent of the German population has received their first jab.

Germany has also relaxed certain travel restrictions, including people traveling from the UK.

From today, fully vaccinated people traveling from the UK, Portugal, Russia, India and Nepal won’t need to quarantine when arriving in Germany.

However, unvaccinated people will still need to quarantine, with an option to test out on the fifth day.

The restrictions on these countries was to slow the spread of the surging Delta Covid variant.

These five countries were classified as “virus variant” countries but now will be labelled as “high incidence areas”.
