The FA has charged Manchester United for a breach of rule E20.1 for the second time in three games after Saturday’s draw against Chelsea. Several United players surrounded Stuart Attwell to furiously dispute his late penalty decision after Scott McTominay brought Armando Broja down in the box.
The heavyweight Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge looked destined to end in a goalless stalemate before Attwell awarded the penalty, which Jorginho netted in the 87th minute. But the late chaos extended into stoppage time, courtesy of Casemiro’s 94th-minute headed equaliser.
United’s players were the ones celebrating at full-time, but their reaction to the penalty decision hasn’t gone unpunished. On Thursday, the FA confirmed it had charged the Red Devils for Erik ten Hag’s players allegedly failing to conduct themselves in an ‘orderly fashion’.
The statement read: “Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 after its fixture versus Chelsea FC on Saturday 22 October 2022 in the Premier League. Manchester United FC allegedly failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion in the 84th minute, and the club has until Friday 28 October 2022 to provide a response.”

Just a week later, United were hit with another FA charge for a E20.1 breach after hounding referee Craig Pawson in their 0-0 draw against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo thought Newcastle had taken a free-kick before stealing the ball from Nick Pope and seemingly scoring the opener.
After Pawson clarified that the visitors hadn’t yet taken the free-kick, United’s players charged in his direction in numbers to argue Ronaldo’s case. Two similar instances in the space of a week could bring Ten Hag’s control over his players into question, with disciplinary incidents piling up.
