The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been charged in Germany with historic sexual offences in Portugal. The offences are alleged to have been committed over a period which includes the date when the then-three-year-old girl went missing.

Christian Brueckner allegedly committed several sexual offences between 2000 and 2017, according to German prosecutors.

Madeline went missing while on holiday in Portugal with her family in 2007.

The Braunschweig prosecutor’s office did not say the charges related to her case.

In a statement, it said: “Specifically, the accused is charged with three offences of aggravated rape and two offences of sexual abuse of children.

“The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann continues.”

Brueckner was formally identified as a suspect in the McCann case in April this year.

He is a convicted child abuser and drug trader, currently behind bars in Germany for raping a woman in the Algarve region of Portugal, which is also were Madeline went missing.

Brueckner has denied involvement in the disappearance of Madeline.

    More to follow.
