The serious collision involved four cars, a lorry and motorbike on the southbound carriageway between junction five for Droitwich and junction six for Worcester.
Most of the vehicles involved are in a single lane, although it has been reported a car is in lane two and another is facing sideways on further across in the third lane.
Traffic had been held at 5.45pm after the first three of the four lanes on the stretch of motorway were closed.
Highways England had earlier tweeted: “The #M5 southbound #J5 (#Droitwich #A38) to #J6 (#Worcester(N) #A449 #Evesham #A4538) 3 lanes have been closed due to a serious collision.
@OFFICIALWMAS are currently at scene. Traffic Officers are on their way to the area to assist.”
This was then followed at 5.51pm with the post: The #M5 southbound #J5 (#Droitwich #A38) to #J6 (#Worcester(N) #A449 #Evesham #A4538) 4 lanes have been closed.

This update followed 15 minutes later at 6.06pm, which read: “The #M5 in BOTH directions #J5 (#Droitwich #A38) to #J6 (#Worcester(N) #A449 #Evesham #A4538) is currently CLOSED due to a serious collision.
“Traffic Officers & @WMerciaPolice are currently at scene, @OFFICIALWMAS are on their way to the area to assist. Avoid the area.”
