Drivers were forced to slam on their brakes to dodge two people walking towards oncoming traffic. Figures were seen strolling around the middle of a lane on the M20 near Ashford in Kent on Sunday, appearing to have no concern about the many vehicles around them.

One driver even had to blast her horn because a woman was standing right in front of her car, seemingly not caring as the vehicle sped towards her.

Dashcams caught what happened on film, with a range of cars being forced to make unexpected stops to avoid hitting the wanderers.

Lara Chandler, who was driving to work when the strange event took place, said she was “gobsmacked” by the pedestrians.

She added: “It was very surreal and unexpected. A lot of other drivers were shocked as well. Everyone slammed on the brakes to slow down.

“I was just hoping this person moved on to the hard shoulder. My main concern was everyone being safe and that there were no accidents. It happened so quickly and was so random.”

Ms Chandler stated that she first realised something was wrong when vehicles started braking out of nowhere up ahead of her.

She said: “People in front started slowing down and putting their hazard lights on, I thought it was an accident.

“Then everyone started to move again and just out of the corner of my eye I saw cars swerving and trying to get into the middle lane.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Kent Police were called at around 10am on Sunday, June 13, to a report of two pedestrians on the M20 coastbound, between junctions 9 and 10.

“Officers attended and safely located the individuals involved, before handing one of them into the care of medical professionals. The scene was safe by around 10.35am.”
