Lucy Letby injected air into a five-day-old baby’s stomach via a nose tube, a court has heard. The prosecution opening against the former Chester nurse began yesterday.

Letby faces 22 charges concerning 17 babies.

Jurors were today given details of how the former nurse is alleged to have killed a baby boy, who was just five days old.

Manchester Crown Court heard that the child died because the air injected into his stomach made hum unable to breath.

Nick Johnson KC, of the prosecution, added that this caused the boy to suffer a cardiac arrest.

The prosecution added that this alleged killed cam just six days after another, that of another baby boy, which the court was told was Letby’s first.

Mr Johnson added that days after the young boy was killed, Letby attacked his twin sister.

The five-day-old baby had been born prematurely at 30 weeks in June 2015, the court was told, weighing only 800 grams.

Despite going into intensive care, he was in good condition.
