A Palace source told The Daily Mail that unless there are rules insisting he wear a mask, Charles will go without one.

They said: “This will be the first time in 18 months that we are seeing a return to normality.

“We’ll be looking forwards, not backwards.

“This is the first time the Prince has been to a location inside and won’t be wearing a mask because it’s a large area where people will be social distancing and it will be the first day of the new rules.

“When the rules state that a mask should be worn, then the Prince will wear one but not otherwise.”

Charles and Camilla are set to spend three days in Devon and Cornwall as part of their annual visit to the South West.

The couple’s first destination will be Exeter Cathedral on the fabled Freedom Day, Monday.

During the visit, Charles, patron of the Exeter Cathedral Development Appeal, and Camilla, will meet community groups and hear about restoration work.

Charles and Camilla’s visit to the South West follows an announcement of over 54,000 new coronavirus cases by Department of Health bosses on Saturday – a number rivalled only by the horrific wave experienced in January.

Almost all Covid rules will be scrapped from Monday including compulsory facemasks, social distancing, signing into venues and quarantine-free travel to amber list countries.

But stricter self-isolation rules will remain until mid-August. From August 16, adults will no longer have to self-isolate if they come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.
