Joseph Bentley, 22, has won the UK James Dyson Award for an incredible device he designed to help stem bleeding from knife wounds. Dubbed REACT, which stands for Rapid Emergency Actuating Tamponade, Mr Bentley says the tool could save hundreds of lives every year. It is aimed to help police treat knife wounds by preventing significant blood loss while waiting for medical assistance.

Stab victims can bleed to death in just five minutes, so emergency services try to prioritise stopping excessive blood loss.

The tool inflates an implantable medical-grade silicone balloon tamponade into the wound tract, effectively filling the cavity and preventing internal bleeding.

Mr Bentley, who is a product design graduate from Essex, believes his prototype could potentially stop a haemorrhage in under a minute.

He decided to mock up the design after two of his friends were victims of knife-related incidents.

He told Sky News: “Knife crime is a topic that is personal to me, as two of my friends were victims of knife-related incidents

“Thankfully both incidents were not fatal, but this is often not the case for so many others.

“Seeing the profound effect that it had on my friends and their families urged me to try and create a solution that could help others in the future.”

Mr Bentley believes current techniques are not advanced enough.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said more needs to be done to tackle knife crime in London.

Speaking with Nick Ferrari on LBC, Mr Johnsonsaid he hoped to speak “quite soon” with London Mayor Sadiq Khan about fighting knife crime, but added “there is more that could be done and I would urge the mayor to do it.”

In the first three months of 2021, knife crime killings in the capital rose 28 percent compared to the same period in 2020, with 17 teenagers losing their lives.

According to the latest figures, London has the highest volume of knife crime in the country, with more than 13,500 offences recorded in the last year.
