There was a clamour from some Liverpool fans for Jurgen Klopp’s side to sign Adama Traore following his swashbuckling performance against Manchester United on Saturday. With two days left out of the transfer window the Reds have not made a move for an attacking player – despite it being widely observed that their current front line is in need of some evolution.
Traore’s display against United showed both why Liverpool have been linked with him in the past – and perhaps why Klopp hasn’t moved for him before now.
The winger was scintillating in the first half, with his pace, power and direct running proving too much for the Red Devils’ midfield and stretching a defence featuring debutant Raphael Varane.
That led to many Liverpool fans on social media calling for their club to stump up the £40million or more it would take to tempt Wolves into selling Traore. In a transfer window when Liverpool’s title rivals have all signed offensive players, a move for the 25-year-old would mirror United’s capture of Jadon Sancho – a quick, direct winger who would bring an extra dimension to the attack.
The 25-year-old’s explosive qualities could do some damage in any top team – and would surely be a welcome addition to a Liverpool front line that needs a fresh injection of energy, as evidenced by their failure to break down Chelsea’s superb defence on Saturday.

First he launched a cross from the right wing to David de Gea’s back post, with Raul Jimenez unable to direct his header on target.
A few minutes later he was whipping a ball in from the left, but on-loan Barcelona man Trincao scuffed his shot.
Then Traore showed great determination up against Luke Shaw to win a corner, with De Gea pulling off a superb double save to deny Roman Saiss from the set-piece.
Shortly afterwards, United secured a barely deserved win through the only goal of the game from a real natural finisher – Mason Greenwood – while Wolves slipped to a third straight league defeat without scoring a goal.
But those few moments from Traore gave the impression that if Bruno Lage can find a way to harness Traore’s qualities while improving his finishing and his final ball, the Wolves boss will have a top player on his hands.

Of course, Bruno may not be the man to unleash Traore’s potential, should Tottenham or another club persuade Wolves to part company with the winger before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Those Liverpool fans calling for a last-ditch move can only hope Klopp feels he can be the manager to take him to the next level.
And that the club’s transfer committee could be convinced to abandon their usual caution and throw the dice in a bid to give their furnish the Reds’ front line with a new weapon.
