The serious penalties would have included major points deductions or even the exclusion of a team from the world championship. Instead, serious financial sanctions are expected to be handed down to Red Bull, who remain adamant they were below the budget cap.

Rival F1 team bosses have demanded action be taken with McLaren CEO Zak Brown writing a letter to the FIA calling for serious punishment. Toto Wolff also noted how he felt the word “minor” to describe Red Bull’s breach doesn’t fit right.

“Is it a so-called minor breach, because I think the word is probably not correct?” he said. “If you’re spending five million more, and you’re still in the minor breach, it still has a big impact on the championship.”
