Lewis Hamilton has explained why he made a public dig at Fernando Alonso hours before the Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes star posted an image of the pair on the podium at the 2007 United States Grand Prix with a simple thumbs up emoticon.
It comes after Alonso suggested Max Verstappen’s titles were “worth more” than Hamilton’s due to the competitiveness of last season. Hamilton made the social media dig just hours before the start of the Mexican Grand Prix where he was embroiled in an on-track battle with the Dutchman.
Speaking after the race, Hamilton said Alonso’s comment “made him giggle” but hinted he was annoyed at the remarks. The seven-time champion said he has “always tried to give praise” to other drivers during his F1 career.
He made the comments when asked what he thought of the Spaniard’s comments in the post-race press conference.

He said: “Max’s titles are worth more than Hamilton’s. I have a lot of respect for Lewis but it’s different when you win seven world championships having only had to fight against your team-mate.”
However, the 41-year-old appeared to row back on his comments yesterday afternoon as he claimed the pair’s titles were “incomparable” He added: “Please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other and let’s enjoy champions and legends of our current time.
“Tired of the continuous search for headlines. Let’s enjoy them”.
