While it may sound obvious, leaving valuables on show is another rookie mistake many homeowners make.

Ben added: “Burglars often look for easy targets – and if you leave valuables outside where they can be seen from the street, it might be assumed that your home is an easy target.

“So don’t let people know that you’ve got expensive stuff lying around. If someone sees your expensive car parked outside, don’t leave the keys in sight or in the ignition.

“The same goes for jewellery, electronics, and other valuables.”
