US intelligence officials are worried about what will happen over the “next couple of months” if Mr Kim’s health worsens. The totalitarian leader appeared on state television last Saturday and was noticeably lighter. He appeared on North Korean state media where he led a political meeting and provided his personal solutions to the nation’s economic troubles.
Experienced observers of the regime pointed out the party leader had lost a significant amount of weight.
US intelligence officials and South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) take Mr Kim’s weight loss very seriously as it may be a sign that would confirm rumours of his poor health.
One theory of the leader’s current low weight is he has done this intentionally to improve his health as he appears to suffer from obesity.
Vipin Narang, an associate professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said that Mr Kim’s weight loss could “likely improve his position at home”.

They said that he had “gained an average of 6 to 7 kilograms per year,” or 50 kg total since he took power in 2011.
US intelligence officer Mike Brodka told NK News: “On the surface, noticeable weight loss may not mean much.
“But it can provide clues to other information that intelligence collectors look for.”
He added that concerning the North Korean leader’s health, it is “important for intelligence to look at different sources of information and indicators of linked events to try and answer”.
He added: “It may be a simple matter of a healthy lifestyle change or a more complex issue.
“Right now, we do not know.
“However, it raises enough serious questions that we must pay attention to events over the next couple of months to find out.”
Recently the North Korean leader has been taking longer and more frequent breaks from the public eye, leading to much speculation as to the nature of his health.
