Kate Middleton tied the knot with Prince William back in 2011 after previously meeting at university. Since then, they have carried out official engagements in person as well as appearances via video link, due to the pandemic.

As well as appearing with one another, the couple will also undertake visits solo.

However, when they are together, they are often seen performing the same body language, known as “mirroring”.

According to one expert, the couple have “signature” rituals that are “different” to other royals.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James explained: “It’s interesting that William and Kate have developed their own signature body language rituals that are distinctly different from any other heirs to the throne and their husbands or wives.”

Comparing this to Prince Charles and Camilla, the expert explained that they use signals of “togetherness” that are rather “unique” in the Royal Family.

The Cambridge’s recently spent a week in Scotland, visiting various different organisations and charities.

It came as part of a royal tour, and the couple even visited the university where they met.

At the time, Judi explained that their matching body language was visible.

She said: “During their trip to Scotland we can see matching head tilts and facial expressions as they go into mutual listening mode (they even adopted a matching crouching posture as they watched people speaking on a monitor) and an identical ‘fig leaf’ pose as they stand with their hands clasped in front of their torsos.

“When they start to speak though we can see them taking it in turns to take the spotlight while the other looks like a rather respectful fan.

“In many ways they are like a non-verbal PR for their own spouse and their messages.

“As William speaks here, using an emphatic one-handed chopping gesture, Kate’s intense eye-gaze not only flatters her husband but it makes what he is saying look twice as interesting.

“When Kate was speaking, William returned the compliment by clasping his hands and watching with matching signals of interest.”

When visiting organisations, the couple will often make speeches.

Judi explained that when either Kate or William is speaking, the other watches and listens.

She said: “The couple do also adopt complimentary body language at times though, with one using status-lowering signals or becoming the audience to the other while the one speaking will use more active gesticulation to get their message across.

“This ability to switch from twinned to contrasting, complimentary body language rituals suggests a lack of any jealousy, resentment or desire to compete for attention between them.”
